How To Prepare For Your Painting

Ready to offer a fresh, modern look to your home? Before you bust out those paint rollers, make sure you’ve properly prepared the place.

Clear The Area

Painting can be messy, and unintentionally dropping some on your beloved sofa or tossing a rug is the last thing you want. Be sure to clear as many furniture and accessories as possible before you start painting any room. Try moving them into the middle of the space and shielding them with plastic to hold things that can not be retrieved safe and out of the way.

Clean

Dust and dirt will destroy any work made with colour. Using a dry towel and vacuum cleaner, dust and vacuum any surface. Please make sure you get into all the nooks and crannies. To get built up grime off, walls, mouldings and trim may require a good scrubbing. Know, the smoother the base, the more it adheres to the paint.

Smooth Surfaces

The time is before you pick up your paintbrush to patch those cracks, bruises and gaps. When it is coated in a fresh coat, even the slightest imperfection left on a wall can appear. Sand down any uneven spots; repair any imperfections and make sure the peeling or cracked paint on the walls is now rubbed off.

Don't Forget To Prime

Often stick to the wall first with a high-quality primer. This will make the new colour stick well and avoid the bleeding through of older colours. Not sure which primer should be used? Here are a handful of tips:

New Drywall: Use a primer based on water
Smoke Stained Walls: Use a primer based on oil
Paneling: Use a primer based on oil
Repainting Walls: feel free to use paint that has a primer already in it. The undercoat works as a form of primer after a wall has been finished, so buying paint with primer in it works well.

Taping Is important

You can think you can handle cutting around those mouldings, curtains, and doorframes, but with little blotches and uneven lines, the odds are your painting abilities can leave you. By applying the tape of painters around sconces, lights, turn plates and mouldings, make the job smoother (and faster). It’s one step you’re not going to want to miss.
